That is a pretty color, shame you blacked out the bay.
Wheel color change for this year?

I completely agree, I love my stock color and would never change it. I think part of the fun of owning a car of a particular vintage is keeping it original paint scheme wise. I don't have the time or patience to paint a car the right way, and if its a boring color like black I want...I'll just buy a black one Razz

No wheel color change this year, maybe in the future, but I have only rocked 1 season on this color and I could stand to go a few more seasons with it before I get tired of it.

chuck_chizzle wrote:

Correct sir! That is the front clip I purchased. 70,000 km on the odometer...about 42,000 miles.

Well I have made some progress, not a ton though because I still am in the middle of midterms and do not have enough time to study, work, and mess with the car.

Here are some pics of my progress though.

Getting her setup to go under the knife.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120226_160409

This is the problem area...right about here...

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120226_160354

The main goodies.

Starting surgery.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120229_180622

Victory! I had to do this by myself because Robbie wasnt home, girlfriend wasnt home, all tech friends were not home as well. LOL. I was going to wait, but decided nah, I can handle it. Came out reasonably well except for the fact that the cherry picker would not go deep enough into the engine bay. I will have to buy a longer piece of square steel to put in the end or perhaps some sort of pole. HF just did not give me enough pole...hehe.

The battery box will have to have the spot welds drilled, removed, ground down, primed, repainted. The battery acid corroded that area and lucky for me it is only surface action with no actual rust penetration. I got worried until I started to really inspect it. Will have to tend to that though before I put in the new motor. As soon as it gets warm enough I will be outside cleaning/degreasing the engine bay getting ready to put in the new motar.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120301_181541

And this is where Im at.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120301_181657

Things on the immediate to do list include sorting out my power steering pump, lines, options. I have a double "F*ck you" of a situation. First of all, my KA24E pump wont work with the SR pump that I got. Sadly I got a HICAS pump car so I have a dual pump setup with 2 high pressure outs. Boo. I was able to take it apart and removed the vanes for the back pump and will just plug it off, but still, not the ideal setup I want.

I will just focus on getting it running/driving though and come back and re-sort what I need to re-sort. I have a 30 day startup warranty on the motor and do not want to lose out on that if something should be wrong.

I am actually going to do this most likely. It is sound logic. I can drive and verify its working order without the power steering. I will worry about it "later".

That ain't shit. I have over 100 more that I have just been stalling in putting up. I think I have over 300+ license plates. Whats really hilarious is alot of them are still current/valid registration!

Minor update:

I got the bolt I needed to block off my HICAS. 16mm x 1.5 pitch...hard to find...EXCEPT when you remember its about the same size as a drain plug.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120306_172506

I just cut off the blank end on there and now I have the perfect short/fat bolt to block off the HICAS correctly. Score.

Here is the gross engine bay before pressure washing.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120308_130046

Now it is somewhat cleaner...not much though.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120308_134718

A little light on her feet in front.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120308_134727

The undercoating that was sprayed on it either at the factory or after the factory (Im guessing after) got all over everything, leaving a black sticky coat of "shit" on nearly all surfaces. Time to start cleaning that crap off, luckily brake clean and carb clean are both wicked solvents for it.

Here is a terrible shot of the battery acid damage over 20+ years. Notice left hand corner.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120301_182047-1

The battery tray was funked and there was no way I could sand it down and paint it since there were so many intricate angles. So I drilled out the spot welds (with a flat/spotweld drill bit), one by one and removed it altogether. I am just going to relocate the battery behind the passenger seat or passenger side rear seat/trunk area. When I got the car corner weighted last that was the area that weighed the least and needed the most weight relocation.

Post tray removal/not washed.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120308_130106

I sanded and prepped the entire area local to it. I really didn't have to go that far up as there was no damage, but the nearest body line was that far up and I wanted it to stop at a good caulk/structural line, not somewhere in between.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120310_131141

This area my pressure washer blew the paint right off (down to the metal) of due to brake fluid drippage/master cylinder leakage. I cleaned it off as best I could with soapy water, brake clean ect. Clearly it still ate my paint I can see now. I found that amusing.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120310_131154

Luckily body shop supply came to the rescue and got me some AH3 Dark Red Cherry Pearl in a rattle can. I fixed all the spots I felt needed attention with a few coats of primer, and a few generous coats of red.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120314_172131

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120314_172147

I know that bracket on the left lower side is painted...it had battery acid damage as well and there was no way I am taking it off and doing it separate, so it got the same treatment as everything else. Call it lazy if you like, but it got sanded/painted all the same. I care not what color it is.

With the engine bay nearly done (no pics of it done, its too dark to properly take a photo) I turned to the motor and started taking off all the BS I knew I would not need. Opened up the lower half to inspect its bowels.

I found some JDM retard drilled a bunch of holes in the oil strainer...great. I know the motives for this are good natured...but please dont... So hopefully my oil pump/front cover hasn't suffered any damage and the oil filter did its job. Cause I know that fucktard did not take the oil sump out to drill it, and oil attracts the shit out of shavings, so I'm dead sure that all the shavings from this stayed up in the oil strainer. Ha.

I did not feel comfortable at all running this stock unit that someone messed with because the drill bit that he was using went all the way through the pickup screen like 6 or 8 times (however many holes you see). So I got the later revised oil pickup sump from Nissan (I believe its stock in later blacktop SR's and on).

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120315_181809

Which would you rather run? Stock redtop oil sump on right, new blacktop oil sump on left.

Since I mainly auto-x and track this car, oil business is really important to me.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120315_181525

Its a really nice unit. Magnetic drain plug, oil temp sender location, nice flap doors, impeccable welds. Very happy. Its also mounted with studs instead of bolts. That is what the 4 plugs on the bottom are for, tightening those 4 nuts you can other wise not get to.

Intake came as well.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120315_181643

Tomorrow I should be getting my motor mounts/all my other shitake' and the motor will be going in on Sat I wanna say. Then I can really start making progress. I could have installed the motor sooner as I have a plethora of stock mounts, but I wanted to just do it once and waited for my poly mounts.

Moar to come.

Yeah, I think original design certainly belongs to APEX'I, but this is a cast/polished reproduction. I am willing to put on cheap parts that are simple metal devices like above air intake, intercooler/piping, radiator, exhaust. Those kind of technologis are thoroughly ironed out even in the cheap market. Its not rocket science part wise, I would never put on a cheap turbo or fuel control system, that is where quality matters, but for numb parts that just have to have a certain shape...ebay all the way!

Small update:

I got my Walbro 255 all squared away. It sucked because I had the pump from my previous Galant VR4, but no pick up, harness/wires, lines ect.

Luckily I called up Full Flow Fuel and those guys knew what was up. Hooked me up with the correct Walbro plug/play harness, filter sock and hose for only $10 shipped!

Matt at FFF is the MAN! Also talked to me about specific part # differences and small pump design changes in the 255 over the years. Great company and guys to deal with. I dont even see how they can make money selling that parts kit for $10 AND shipping it to me. I will forever order my fuel related components from them though, hands down.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120325_135901

It has since been installed/wired into its home/in car. Sweet, one less thing on my "bench".

I also got all my gauges ordered...$TACK got freaking EXPENSIVE!

The pro gauges (peak/hold) have 7 different LED backlights "through the dial", flash red (or whatever color you want) when over the 10% threshold you set, have active 12v high/low outputs for buzzer, fan relay, (or light, but it lights/flashes itself) and can log max/min values.

Sick gauge for 66% the price of a Defi.

Plus they look clean, and are all business.

PS I will be keeping them black background/white needles/numbers. My stock gauges are the same so it will match absolutely perfect. Exactly like below.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 SGG-ST3510

I also got my oil pressure output all setup with 1/8 NPT fittings, put a plug in it for the time being because my gauge/sender will not get here till like the 11th of April. I guess STACK has to mine and forge the materials from raw or some BS because all of my gauges are not going to be here till April 11th.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120325_143844

I also got my wiring completely done, was able to solder and heatshrink tube the entire mess and get it looking OEM, actually was able to use the same color wires for any/all the wires I had to extend. That also makes me warm and fuzzy in an OCD kind of way.

I installed the finished harness in the car, mounted the ECU, now the motar just has to find its way into its home and we will be on the home stretch.

Also of BS note, my wideband AEM is on backorder too, WTF, really?!

I wish I knew you wanted an AEM wideband. I am going to be removing mine and selling it soon. Oh well, the rest of your build looks like it is coming along nicely. What is the material that you have wrapped around the fuel pump? Is it just some sort of sound deadening material?

Why don't you want it or need it? Just curious.

I am dithching the AEM for an Innovate. They are easy to for datalogging with a NIStune setup. At least that is what the site says. I am very willing to remove it from the car for you. I have all the original packaging, and parts for it including the weld in bung. Will you be in the area to pick it up or are you planning on having it shipped? PM me and we can work out a price if you are interested. Also it was only on my car last summer ~2000 miles so the sensor should be good yet. I had it installed at the end of my DP right before the CAT so it was installed per the manufacturers specs.

Well shit, replied before the UPS/FEDEX guy showed up.

Interfooler showed up. I have to say...I am DAMN impressed with now nice the welds are ect. CXRacing kit. I took the gamble and wanted to see how much 239.99 shipped got me/how bad it really looked...f*cking fantastic.

Ian is pleased with his gamble!

Also the ONE thing I have been waiting on arrived!

Motar mounts.

Time for SR to go in!

Though, it sucks because I have a calc exam on wed and need to study super hardcore for it, so anything car related is on the very farthest back burner till wed.

2 steps forward, 1 step back...always...

Well I got the motor in and was tying up a bunch of loose ends, literally thought I was only a day or so away from starting running it...WRONG!

Lets start with pics of the good stuff.

Rolled car out, got engine bay prep final, removed front bumper to allow more better access's.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120328_161515

Me being retarded.

Cleaned/lubed what needed to be for clutch pivot ball, throwout bearing, input shaft ect and mated the engine to the trans.

Hilarious point of view IMO, rednecks doing their motor swap out in the driveway.

My roommate looking retarded after we got it in.

While I had the wheels off and I was feeling saucy, I quickly put my new hubs on. I really digged the quality of these hubs and cant wait to track the shit out of them with their lifetime warranty. I also ordered them directly from Drop and informed them what I was going to do with them. They said it doesn't matter, they will warranty them. SCORE! Free front wheel bearings for life (or until Drop goes out of business Smile )

Got them torqued and done super fast since I've had my old ones off so much. Put the wheels back on and rolled it back into the garage before it started getting dark.

Started mocking things up so I can start to visualize what needs to be cut and bolted to where.

First order of business was to get the new oil sump/pan unit installed.

Riggle's 1990 240sx. - Page 2 20120329_111031

I was surprised to find all the plugs had rubber O-rings on them to hopefully seal well.

Oil temp sending unit installed/threadsealed.

New oil sump installed, fit great. God I love OEM parts.

Ran a thread tap down all the threads to get the old schmooey out. Also studded/threadlocked all pan studs. It was a nice surprise to find all the studs were allen heads, makes installing studs 100% easier instead of double nutting all of them.

GM anaerobic gasket maker. Best stuff on the planet, fuck all that silicone/rtv BS. This is where its at. Thin layer applied and pan is ready to go in.

Pan installed like dog shit, LOL. It fits great, but back 3 studs by subframe is nearly impossible to get to for a number of reasons that I wont mention or bore you guys with. Got it done, thats all that matters.

While double checking things around in the engine bay I found my turbo to manifold studs was missing a nut. Odd. Pulled off turbo setup so I can get to the studs easier and bend the safety tabs in/out correctly.

I'll be damned, every single nut was loose, glad I found out now. Cinched them all down, rebent safety tabs. Went to go install manifold and turbo.

Got everything together, was torquing down manifold stud bolts and SNAP! Manifold stud broke...farthest back by brake booster...FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK! I wasn't even getting to the torque point yet, it just snapped like a brittle pretzel...

I am so lucky...I broke the farthest back one with the brake booster in they way, no way to get a drill in there with extractors...it broke off recessed, so I have no chance of grabbing it with vice grips/heating with torch...

I will have to center punch it, drill a small hole, pound a 4 sided flute in there, heat with torch, hope to god it comes out. I am SURE those steel bolts in the aluminum head will come out great...

Oh yeah, how am I going to dimensionally pull all that off...I know, pull the motor/trans again!

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK X 1000!

So now I am even FURTHER behind than I was...

I guess I am quasi lucky that I have spring break all next week, but still...

Again, pics were turned correctly when I uploaded them, correct in my albums, wrong here, sorry, will try to fix.

My only advice is to replace every stud, RB's do the same thing and I broke 3!
